Honeymoons

Don't you just wish you could go back to your 21 year old self for one hour and tell her all she needs to know to get through the next 15 years with grace and style? I was 21 years old when I got married. And a very sheltered 21 year old (for which I am very thankful), but I didn't know a thing. Mark wanted to go a a cruise for our honeymoon. I was too scared. I just knew the ship would sink. Mark wanted to go to the beach. I hated the beach. (Just the fact that Mark would marry me still after he realized how much I hated the beach shows how much he DOES love me. He loves the beach and would live there if he could). I am lily-white and I just knew I would spend my honeymoon sunburnt and miserable. And plus, I don't like to be hot and sweaty. Mark really is not a big mountains person, but he would have went to the mountains, but I just knew Mark would be miserable and who wants a miserable husband on their honeymoon. Has anyone caught on to how much I "knew" at 21?

So, two weeks before the wedding Mark is still trying to figure out the honeymoon location. I'm sure at this point he would have settled for anywhere, just so he wouldn't have to call me anymore and say "What about....?" He finally settled on New Orleans, it was still on land, there was no beach, and he had been there before so he KNEW he would not be miserable.

We went and had a wonderful time. As an aside, did ya'll know I called my daddy from the hotel to let him know "we had gotten there." Even in college it was so ingrained in me to call someone when I got "there" I called MY DADDY FROM THE HOTEL to tell him I had arrived in MY HOTEL ROOM WITH MY NEW HUSBAND. It did not seem awkward at all to me, but I'm sure it did to my dad, so sorry dad. And I'm sure Mark was like, "What the heck is going on here?"

There is a lot to do in New Orleans, Jackson Square, the aquarium, all the wonderful restaurants. But ya'll in August it is HOT. Even hotter than Birmingham if that is possible. In all the pictures we look like limp dishrags from the heat. But, we had a good time and we would like to go back and see the restoration. But not in August, no thank you mam.

We stayed for 6 days and then came back to the real world. But I loved my real world, our little four room apartment and me cooking dinner after school each day (we were married the summer between my junior and senior year) and Mark coming home to me each night. Four, and hopefully soon to be five children later, it just keeps getting better and I love that Mark still comes home to me each night. Its not always roses, and pretty, and sweet, no marriage is, but it's good for us.

So tell me, where did you honeymoon, and did you call your dad when you got there?

  1. I just love that your life makes me crack up!! I mean no offense. haha.
I love that you were sheltered until you married in to our fam! HA!
Also, we flew to Jamaica and NO I did not feel compelled to call anyone (and just FYI I was younger than you:)!
Really, though, we are glad Mark put up with you, too. We wouldn't have anyone else.

  2. We went on a cruise to ensenada! Ensenada was terrible (a comedian on the ship said he'd never taken a cruise ship to a garage sale before-described it perfectly), but the cruise part was a ton of fun! I didn't call my dad but I did call my good friend Katie to discuss....newlywed girl problems ;)

And now I can laugh about "things I knew" too :)

  3. We went to Destin for an amount of time that almost equals nothing b/c Jay had to get back to work. I can't say definately but I'm pretty sure I called Daddy too. You know our husbands are scarred.

  4. Cute.

I married my dear husband at age 19 and our honeymoon we went home to our apartment for a few days before his out of state mom left and then we went to Cedar Point (roller coaster park) and stayed in a nice hotel. Fun!

I did NOT call my dad, or my mom.

We've been married 9 years now and have 5 beautiful children so far.

  5. Ok. I was 20, and we went to Gatlinburg! (I so wanted to go to Cancun but it was a little pricey, especially in December for some reason.) Gatlinburg was a lot of fun, and my Mother had gotten us matching air-brushed sweatshirts (Christmas trees that said "Our first Christmas") that I wanted to wear everyday. I was so proud of the "Just Married" on the back of the car.

Nope. Did not call Daddy. ;-)

  6. We went to Gulf Shores for a week and it was wonderful! This was my third marriage (yes, third) and the RIGHT one!

If I could go back to when I was 21 I would tell myself "Lou Cinda, do NOT marry this one! Wait for Steve" :)

So glad you are still blissful and happy! I am now!

    Lou Cinda :)

  7. Well, we honeymooned WITH our parents!!! :) lol Actually we got married in Pigeon Forge and our parents and siblings two friends and just a few extended family were there for the wedding. So, in the few days that followed we did things with our family and friends!

The calling your dad thing - SO LIKE ME!!!!! If we go anywhere, I always call my mom and dad and let them know we made it. I ALWAYS have!! Even when we go on a date(before children), I will call and tell them where we were going to be and then when we got home I would call and let them know. I do this NOW because they usually have our kiddos!! :) Eric thought it was funny at first, but now he reminds me to do so. :)

  8. I love your wedding series, it's a lot of fun to read about!
I was 23 when we married and probably just as sheltered as you were and very happy about it.
We didn't leave for our honeymoon until Sunday night after our Saturday wedding, and my parents wanted to have all the out of town family over on Sunday for a barbeque, so we went straight from our wedding night hotel back to my parents house to see both families...that felt a little weird ;)
I'm half Italian and it had always been my dream to visit Italy one day. Ryan tried to surprise me with a trip to Italy for our honeymoon, but I found an Italy vacation book in his car a few months before the wedding, so I ruined the surprise part.
The trip was amazing, everything & more that I'd always dreamed about, except Ryan got really sick on about day 6 of our 10 day trip. He had a really high fever and ached all over. It put a huge damper on our trip, but I was extremely happy to take care of my new husband! He was such a trooper and still tried to get out & do some things even though he felt awful & looked like a ghost.

  9. Yes, I did call my Mama and Daddy from the Holiday Inn in Gadsden on our way to the mountains and then he called the your Daddy's parents and told them that we were safe. I know people have laughed about that down through the years, but I don't care.

  10. So funny! We got married when I was 23 and he was 22, its been nearly 10 years. It was Dec 30, 1999 and everyone was concerned about Y2K. All I cared about was getting married! We went to Memphis, TN b/c he knows how much I love Elvis.
I didn't call my parents (I don't think). But, now that I'm 'grown-up' I still call them whenever we go out of town and I get ill with them when they don't call me when they go. I mean, I worry and its only considerate - that's what they taught me! ;)

  11. My husband and I met while he was stationed in Germany, and we got married after dating for 2 years. For our honeymoon we flew to the States so I could meet his parents and family! We stayed with his family for 3 weeks, and yes, we are still married. :-) This year we celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary.
Oh and I did call my mom to let her know we had made it safely...

  12. We went to Gatlinburg and no I didn't call anyone once I got "there" lol. But I was 24 when I got married and had lived away from my parents before that (out of state even!) so I had already experienced freedom.

  13. That is soooo funny!!! I was 23 when we got married and I did not call my dad!!!

We went to the beach, and then got bored (hee heee heee!) because the weather was bad, so we drove up to Sydney for a few days where the weather was good and I got sunburnt badly at the beach :)

Our honeymoon included our first Christmas together, which was lovely. Despite the sunburn, and kicking out my new husband because he was snoring... we had a WONDERFUL time!!!!!

  14. I was 29, married in May, went to Gatlinburg for a week. Called my parents. My aunt and uncle were going to Gatlinburg for another wedding, so we hung out with them for a day: ) Nine year later with two children, we don't get to hang out with family enough. I'm glad we to the opportunity.

  16. Hey! NO I didn't call me Dad or my Mom or anybody else! We went back to our apartment in M'vallo for the night, while C went to grandparents. We lounged around, opened presents and ate leftovers from the wedding. Best meal we've ever had! The next morning we traveled up through Little RIver Canyon and onto "Chatta" Tenn.where we spent very little time in our hotel! We walked around Barnes and Nobles looking at books and mags. Something we normally don't get to do. Even now, that is our "Hot Date!" We visited Stone Mt. GA. Pick up C a few days later and became an awesome family!

  17. Oh boy...we went to Barbados on our honeymoon! It was lovely and quite the experience since I'd never been off the East Coast before that trip. As much fun as I was having, I also was homesick! Crazy, I know! But I am just a home girl and this was super far away....I never said anything but one evening about four days into our trip, my sweet hubbie asked me, "Hey, would you like to call your folks!" Would I?? (I mean, is that "allowed"?!?!) I was thrilled...and, admittedly, much happier the rest of the trip! I'm tellin' - smart man that one that I married! I still love him for that phone call!!

  18. We came down here to this very beach..and I called my Mom EVERY SINGLE DAY of my honeymoon!!

    I was 19 and pathetic!

Remember my homesick post back during Blogher? Yeah, I'd never really been away too much and it was QUITE the shock to my poor little 19 year old self.

Geesh. What a pud' I was (am) :)

  19. That was fun! I married at 22 and we only had a weekend(work and all). We were supposed to go up to Eureka and stay at a beautiful bed and breakfast. BUT, we stopped in Ukiah to use the restroom and get something to drink...and our car wouldn't start! So, we stayed in Eureka. It wasn't exactly what we would have liked...but it worked;-)

That Monday...we found out it was just that the wire that connected to our car battery had dislodged..simple :-o

And yes, I did call my parents..still do at 33 :-)

    Lots of love,
    Sommer

  21. Hi there! Found you on the AL Bloggers site!
How cute is your honeymoon story! I was 21 also when we got married, almost 8 years ago, and we were supposed to go to Paris for 2 weeks. BUT 9/11 happened just a few weeks before our wedding in 2001, so I was nervous to go out of the country. Looking back, we couldve gotten some sweet deals, and flying probably has not been safer since then, but we just didnt know! We ended up spending 2 weeks in North Carolina, partly in the mountains and then on the coast.
I didnt call my parents for a while...but I'm pretty sure I did call at some point! Pretty funny!

  22. Okay, not only did I call my parents to tell them I had made it to our location. When it was time to leave to go "home" I cried. I cried because sure the honeymoon was fun but I was going to have to live day after day with somebody that didn't love me as much as my Mom and Dad (or so I thought). Yes, you guessed it I was an only child. But ten years later and two wonderful kids later I sure am glad I went "home" with my hubbie.
