Mildred, Aka....

Sunday night a sudden urge hit me. I tried to suppress it, but it is Wednesday and it still hasn't gone away. I can't stop thinking about it. It is consuming my thoughts and at the library Monday I even perused a section of the library that only a few tred.

I want to sew something.

I want to make a tote bag. I know, the domesticity is just too much.

You see, my Bible Study group is starting back up in September and I would like to have a cute tote bag to take all my assorted Bible Study things in. A tote bag just for Bible Study that will not be crammed with late library books, grocery receipts, extra diapers, and three week old (or longer) sticky gummy snacks. A bag that has a cute little compartment to put my different colored pens and extra safety pins. And just big enough for my Bible and notebook. No child will be able to say, "Can you carry my stuff for me?" I will not have enough room in my cute little tote bag. A cute little tote bag with MY initials embroidered on it.

So, I went to the sewing section of the library and saw craft books galore. Every kind of craft imaginable was represented at this library. Except for a book on making tote bags. Tonight I am going to google "how to sew a tote bag with little-to-no sewing experience" and see what I can come up with.

I actually have a sewing machine. Her name is Mildred. But you see, Mildred fancies herself a Tiffany. She has an attitude. She is very high maintenance. She thinks I should do things her way. She does not like to be pushed at all. She will do about ten straight stitches and then she starts all, "I will show you MamaHen. You think you are going to sew with me? We'll see about that." And then she pops that bobbin like nobody's business.

To work with Mildred is an exercise in patience and perseverance that I have not desired to pursue. Until now.

Rest up Mildred. You are going to be sewing very soon.

  5. I made a diaper/tote bag when Schyler was a baby and it was pretty easy. I'm sure you can do it.

  6. An uncooperative sewing machine makes me cranky! I have one that I'm not using at the moment, that has "tension" issues (maybe it gets cranky with me!!) I use my tried and true Singer. The newer machine has a computer chip, the old one is just plain old machinery and I love it! I've named our computers, I hadn't thought about my machines though...Hmmm... Good luck, I do want to encourage all to sew!

  11. You are killing me here. (You know how I hate to get my machine out. And what I think MY bobbin's problem is. . .)

Yep. My machine and bobbin definitely consider themselves high and mighty and do not want to work with the likes of lowly ol' me.

I seem to have passed this distaste for sewing things on to Big Sister, but Middle Sister remains undefiled. Maybe you could have a sewing a tote bag co-op. :-)
